With the hot weather upon us, we need to remind ourselves
of a few precautions.
We all know better than to leave our dogs in hot cars. We know
they need lots of fresh water available. We know that over-exertion
in hot weather can cause heat exhaustion, so we might want to
limit training or jogging etc.
We need to check that outdoor runs have shade and that dog houses are not too hot. Training should be done in the early morning or evening when it's cooler. Even then we should be considerate enough to look for patches of shade to practice long sits and downs.
Walk a mile in your dog's moccasins. Alright, maybe not a mile, but on a nice hot day, about noon, pull off your shoes and socks, and walk a block or two on the hot pavement. This little experiment is almost guaranteed to make us more aware of the discomfort dogs experience during hot weather.
The bottom line is, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog.
Good luck with your training
